Pokemon Trainer Guide Introduction

Pokemon Trainer is one of the most interesting characters in the game and features three separate and very different characters that you can play as, interchangeable during battle by pressing down + B.

Each of the characters has a vastly different kit, so I'll break it down by character below:

Squirtle Combos

Squirtle is combo king. He can combo out of pretty much any pop-up, and his skills can be used interchangeably between up + aerial and forward + aerial continuously.

Example setup:
  • Down throw
  • Side aerial
  • down tilt
  • Side aerial
  • Repeat
In terms of kill potential, Squirtle's tilts are basically unlikely to kill anyone. You'll need to either smash attack or gimp them off the stage.

Ivysaur Combos

Ivysaur is primarily an upwards attacker and specializes in juggling with his up + aerial. He's a bit slower than Squirtle, so you'll want to pull him out when the enemy is around 60% damage in order to stay safe during knockback.

Example setups:
  • Down throw
  • Neutral air
  • Regrab
  • Up-Throw
  • Up-Air
  • Up-Air
  • Up - B
Ivysaur has a lot more kill potential than Squirtle, and can kill with his aerials and tilts.

Charizard Combos

Charizard isn't much of a combo character, but he can down throw to forward aerial at lower percentages. Generally speaking he's your off-stage finisher with forward aerial or if you're playing against lower level players, an on-stage finisher with his Side + B is possible too.

Pokemon Trainer Tips

  • Swapping pokemon mid-battle can be done, but try and time it so it's got some utility to it.
  • Ivysaur can be swapped out for Charizard after a failed Up + B to recover.
