After almost 20 years...

Smash has new players coming in every day with the release of Ultimate. Some would-be gamers might be sitting on the sidelines wondering if they can ever catch-up with veterans, and the answer is a resounding YES!

Don't expect to be stomping your war-hardened friends on Day 1, but the characters below are easy enough to pick up that even a beginner can deal some damage and grab some kills. In a 1v1v1v1, plot accordingly and you may even end up the victor!

Ike

Ike is one of every beginner's dream characters. His Up + B is one dimensional but effective. His smash attacks are relatively fast for something that can KO most enemies at 80% without wind-up time, and if you end up liking his playstyle, he's actually pretty decent at a mid to higher level of play.

Pit

Pit's quite different from Ike in many ways. His main draw for beginners is his absolutely incredible recovery. His three midair jumps, glide, and Wings of Icarus makes him nearly impossible to kill through sheer recovery fail. He's also got a very large range projectile, making him easy to fire off damage from afar while your teammates go for the kill.

King K. Rool

K. Rool is somewhat of a hybrid between Ike and Pit. His recovery is amazing and he has a medium sized projectile, but he's also got that absurd killing power we know and love from large-sized bruisers.

Kirby

Last but not least we have Kirby, a character that has average speed, tons of recovery jumps, and some of the easiest attacks in the game. The main downside is that he never really becomes too good as you get better at the game, but is certainly easy to pick up quickly.

Conclusions

If you're looking to first get into the game, these characters are great to start with and are definitely enough to get your feet wet. Ultimately though, you'll want to unlock all the characters and see who works best for you!
